Yemi Candide-Johnson is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the Senior Partner at Strachan Partners. He is continuously engaged as lead counsel in ongoing major and high-profile commercial and public policy disputes across the courts of Nigeria and has been either counsel or arbitrator in several domestic and international commercial arbitrations in the maritime, petroleum banking, and construction industries. Yemi also has remarkable experience in advising on complex commercial transactions as well as advising foreign investors on potential investments in Nigeria.
Yemi is a former President of the Lagos Court of Arbitration, Africa’s foremost dispute resolution institution, and the Chairman of the board of Directors, of Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company.
Major Recent Cases / Transactions
Yemi has chaired and sat as co-arbitrator in a number of arbitrations across construction, petroleum, and public matters.
He successfully defended the Government on the use of the newly introduced vehicle registration documents and driver’s license;
He represents the defendant in a Million Dollar Royalty claim by Vitamalt West Africa against Vitamalt Nigeria
He has advised an international consortium in the billion-dollar reclamation and development of the Eko Atlantic City.
Yemi continues to represent clients’ interest in major real estate developments in FCT, Abuja.
Yemi also advises investors on farm-in negotiations for Nigerian “marginal oilfields” and petroleum bidding rounds.
Yemi leads the team representing an oil and gas company in an arbitral dispute relating to the validity of data admitted in a redetermination process in respect of equity participation in oil blocks over which parties hold joint interests.
Successfully represented the Plaintiff in an action seeking to compel the Securities and Exchange Commission to exercise transnational regulatory powers over a company listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange.
